Fresh Air Ventilation & It's Importance in Tight Homes

Over the years the building industry has relied on outside air infiltration to leak into a home via breaks in thermal envelope to provide needed fresh air. That way of thinking is flawed as the goal should be to achieve energy efficiency, comfort, indoor air quality & durability for all homes.

To achieve those goals a home needs to be tight & ventilated right. So, what do we do about fresh air? We install a Fresh Air Ventilation Device such as the American Standard QF130V to control on our terms where, when & how filtrated fresh air is being supplied into the home. Fresh Air Ventilation purges indoor pollutants & renews oxygen while providing good indoor air quality.

Louisiana Mechanical Code requires that any home having air exchanges per hour (ACH) of 5 or less must be provided fresh air ventilation.  While performing blower door testing over the past 10 years for our customers & builders, we have seen on average (ACH) of 2.5 – 3.5 with some homes being even tighter. It is more cost effective to plan & install fresh air ventilation during the building of the home vs having to retrofit at a later point.
